Major hardware upgrade

[by sven @ Tue Sep 7 18:31 CEST 2004]

As you can see it has been a while since I typed something on this weblog. May'be you have already noticed, but more likely you have not, that there was something going on with freegw this weekend. Freegw had namely had a major hardware upgrade. Because I make heavy use of some pretty complex Perl and PHP scripts (e.g. cvsweb, phpmyadmin) that take a lot of CPU time from my old Pentium 100, I couldn't really stand the long loading time anymore.

So at the local second-hand computer store I bought a nice little HP Vectra VL400 desktop that houses a Pentium III 733 MHz processor and 200 MB memory for not to much money. In addition, the new system has the disposal of a 10 GB disk drive and a 10/100 Mbit network interface card. For a moment I was afraid that the new Vectra uses the very buggy Intel 820 chipset that suffers from the Memory Translation Hub reboot issue, but luckily it uses a 815 chipset that doesn't has this problem. Read a little more about the new hardware configuration in the /dev section. Photographs of the new system mounted in the meter cupboard will be availabe soon.
